Messi and Higuain regularly lined up alongside one another when representing their country, with the pair carrying the Albiceleste agonisingly close to World Cup glory in 2014. Both were at the peak of their powers back then, as they graced the books of Barcelona and Napoli respectively.

Higuain opted to bring the curtain down on his career with a spell in MLS, as he joined Inter Miami as an expansion franchise in 2020. He scored 29 goals across two years, making him the club’s all-time leading scorer until Leonardo Campana recently passed that mark.

Messi is expected to surge past it as well, as the eight-time Ballon d’Or looks to make more history, and he is linking up again with Higuain in the United States – with the former frontman still only 36 years of age. He has rejoined the Herons as part of the backroom team with Inter Miami II.
