For much of the season, it looked as if Harry Kane would cruise into the World Cup as the Premier League’s top scorer, fit and firing, England’s next great hope and a deeply popular player to boot.
Somehow, all of that has fallen away. Mo Salah has raced ahead in the race for the Golden Boot and if there is to be one superstar who inspires an underwhelming team from a country beginning with ‘E’ into the later stages of the competition, it looks more likely to be him.
The frontman – who has 23 caps for his country – has been rushed back from injury and is now struggling for sharpness; having missed the two most recent friendlies, his Three Lions place may now even be in doubt.
Moreover, Kane’s almost universal popularity has slipped over two Twitter storms; the first coming when he went to great lengths to claim Spurs’ second goal against Stoke to edge closer to Salah in the Golden Boot chase and the second when the FA poked fun at their golden boy with a tweet after the defeat to Manchester United last month.
The hitman could have reclaimed the joke online but has remained largely silent and now that he has spoken out, his comments have not gone down too well with rival fans…
