Last week, Newcastle were one of 14 Premier League clubs that voted to close the summer transfer window before the first game of next season, helping secure the two-thirds majority to pass the English top flight’s latest rule change.
But not everybody is so convinced by the idea. It’s a nice one in theory, but the rest of Europe is yet to follow suit – meaning they’ll still be able to whisk players away from the Premier League until the end of August.
Likewise, although one of the reasons behind the decision is to ease the burden on managers who have to prepare for the opening weeks of the season not knowing what their squad will look like by the end of the month, most would surely prefer the option of making last-minute changes after seeing their side in competitive action.
