It has been reported previously that Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to replace both Stuart Armstrong and Patrick Roberts before the summer transfer window closes, and he should make an audacious swoop for Everton’s Davy Klaassen, rated at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, to find a solution to the former.
What’s the word, then?
Well, the Bhoys lost one of their key attack-minded midfielders from the past few years when Stuart Armstrong joined Southampton earlier in the summer, and it is clear to see that the Scottish Premiership champions need to replace him with another player who can not only provide a goal threat from the middle of the park, but also a creative eye as well.
Those individuals are of course not ten-a-penny to find, as it appears Rodgers has found so far having made no progress on any deals in that particular position.
With the arrival of Steven Gerrard as Rangers boss however, it is clear that the Bhoys need to act quickly in what could be a tough season in their bid to win the league title for an eighth season running.
Why should they sign Klaassen?
The Dutchman arrived at Goodison Park last summer following an outstanding spell with Ajax, and big things were expected of him under former Toffees boss Ronald Koeman.
However, things didn’t work out as he was just another No.10 similar to Gylfi Sigurdsson and Wayne Rooney, and he found himself down the pecking order and out of favour – he only played 249 minutes of Premier League football this season.
It is uncertain whether he will be a regular under new manager Marco Silva or not, but if he isn’t then Rodgers, who should also be targeting a move for an unhappy Premier League captain to boost his defence, should make a cheeky bid – loan or permanent – to bring him to Celtic Park with the added carrot of Champions League football to offer.
The 25-year-old scored 55 goals and provided a further 38 assists in 180 Ajax appearances, and there seems little doubt he would be a huge success for the Bhoys too despite his Everton struggles.
