Everton manager Marco Silva is being lined up as the next manager at Benfica, according to Portuguese publication CM Jornal.
What’s the word?
Silva only moved to Merseyside in the summer and has taken charge of just 12 games, yet the Portuguese club are said to be looking at the 41-year-old as their next manager.
The Portuguese outlet, as picked up by HITC, suggest that Silva, ex-Sporting Lisbon coaches Leonardo Jardim and Jorge Jesus, and current Braga boss Abel Ferreira are the names making a shortlist to replace Rui Vitoria.
The 48-year-old currently at the reigns of Benfica has been in charge since 2015. In that time, the former midfielder has won both the Primeira Liga and Supertaca Candido de Oliveira twice, as well as the Taca da Liga and Taca de Portugal in a treble winning season.
CM Jornal’s report suggests that the club are considering sacking Vitoria after winning just five of the opening eight games and failing to retain the league last season, which fell to rivals FC Porto.
Silva should be off limits
No matter who the club is, Everton should put up a stiff guard and tell them that their head coach is off limits.
Having initially failed to get the Portuguese manager to replace Ronald Koeman when Watford refused their approach, the Merseyside club finally landed the 41-year-old in the summer as Sam Allardyce’s replacement.
It’s only been 12 games since and the Goodison Park side have at times played some of their best football in a long while, even if results have not always been there to show for it.
With Silva at the helm, the club can look to develop a style of play and work on improving their current return of four wins from ten Premier League games, but they cannot do that if they make a third managerial change in little over a year.
Richarlison, having made the summer move from Watford, is also returning to the form he displayed at the Hertfordshire club when under the guidance of his current gaffer.
The only issue is when Everton came chasing Silva this time last year, the manager’s head was turned and Watford’s results suffered.
